Stunning Southern Malawi

Ohhhhhhhhhhh Malawi. We absolutely love this country. We got our passports stamped, free entry which is always a bonus, and 28 days ahead of us to explore and experience.

... another cramped mini bus ride, heading for Lake Malawi, hoorah

After the capital Lilongwe, in which we entered in a torrential rain storm, boooooo, we headed for the one and only Lake Malawi. Senga Bay our first destination. As it happens here, transport takes longer than expected, and the ute dropped us 5km out from our nights accommodation. Our only option, walking aint so safe, was a....................... BIKE TAXI!!!! I was a bit excited, never ridden on the back of a bike with my full backpack, and a ukulele, at night, on a dirt road before. The guys did so well but were a bit pooped when we arrived. Our first time on a bike in 2 months!

Here we are at our destination, bikes and people in one piece

The lake is breathtaking and its size makes it seem like an ocean. This was our first swimming spot, and what a stunner it was.

We were accosted by a dozen kids during our morning walk on the beach who jumped at the chance of using Marty as a merry-go-round. He didn't mind so much. It was oh so amusing for me.

Leaving the lake is never easy, and we knew we would be back, but the majestic Mount Mulange was calling us. After a brief visit to Blantyre in the south ( big thanks to Paul and Dillis who picked us up hitching from Senga Bay) we took 3 modes of transport to get to the mountain. One was an open tray truck which quickly filled up with over100kg of bananas and pineapples on top of us (oh and then another 100kg of maize meal later on... ). It was uncomfortable but pretty damn funny. We had to restrain ourselves from eating them.

The mountain ... well, I think it deserves an entry just on its own :) stay tuned...
